WASHINGTON – To the men and women of the U.S. Marshals Service: Today, I share your pride as we celebrate 220 years of rich history as our nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency – a history that began on this date in 1789, when President George Washington signed the Judiciary Act and established the original 13 Marshals for the states.

Through the settling of the West, integration of our schools, apprehension of the most dangerous of criminals and steadfast protection of the judiciary, the U.S. Marshals have been called upon time and again to perform both unique and critical missions during times of crisis and times of peace. We have answered that call.

Today, our 4,900 men and women, each dedicated to the tenants of justice, integrity and service, continue to perform a variety of missions critical to safeguarding not only our citizenry, but the very processes by which we govern. Our missions are vital, and you perform them superbly.

It is my distinct honor to lead an organization of so many dedicated professionals, and to take part in this celebration of another milestone and a unique history. Congratulations to you all!
